Claim Check

The wellness industry sells language. We read it like a contract.

Claim Check is a weekday newsletter about the words on health products.

Each edition takes one claim and checks it against the regulation behind it, the evidence cited for it, and what the sentence is actually allowed to mean.

The gap between those three is what you end up paying for.

Every weekday morning, we close it.

Where the scope begins and ends

In scope

The phrase on the front of the box. The study cited on the back. The authority in the advertisement. The idea circulating on your feed.

Out of scope

We do not rate ingredients. Dose and absorption are a different job for a different newsletter.

Whole foods and recipes belong somewhere else entirely.

Brands are never named here. We describe the product type and the claim, because the wording is the problem and the wording is shared right across the shelf.

Four steps, in order

  1. The claim. Printed as you meet it, before any comment.

  2. The turn. What the phrase is permitted to mean under the rules that govern it.

  3. The record. The regulation, the study, the credential, or the origin.

  4. The verdict. One of four words, plus what we would do.

Sources sit at the foot of every edition. Real documents, named, so you can go and read them.

Written for the person reading the label in the aisle

You read labels. You are not careless with money, and you would rather know now than years later in a settlement notice.

Claim Check has no narrator and nothing to sell you. The voice belongs to the newsletter.

Pro-evidence and pro-consumer. The wording is what we hold accountable.
